St. Francis lived from 1181-1226 in the regions of Italy and France. He is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment because he is said to have even preached to the birds and had a deep love for nature (Mark 16:15). However, St. Francis' love extended to people as well as evidenced by his sacrificial life.
